Mixed Martial Arts: a Sport
MMA is a highly competitive, full contact combat sport. It combines both martial art traditions and non-traditional techniques, such as striking and grappling, while standing or down on the ground.
Arguably one of the most complex and intricate sports in the world, MMA freely incorporates techniques and strategies from a wide variety of martial arts: Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do, Judo, boxing, wrestling, and just about every other martial art ever developed.
Confronting any two of theses martial arts already results in a countless number of interesting possibilities.
A well-rounded MMA competitor will have studied many of these strategies and techniques to develop his or her own personal fighting style. To succeed in this sport, one has to have prowess in striking, grappling, and takedowns, whereby all aspects of a fight blend together seamlessly and dynamically.
MMA fighters must be consummate athletes: strong, disciplined and perfectly fit. As using his or her combat skills is extremely dangerous, excellent
mental preparation is equally necessary. Last but not least, the competitors must remain respectful towards their opponents at all times.
Each MMA fight is unique and exciting. In the words of the former U.S. champion B.J. Penn: "The realm of what can happen in the cage when two fighters engage is limitless. MMA is so profound and amazing. No matter how badly a fighter is getting beaten, there is always something that he can pull out of his arsenal to turn the tide and gain the upper hand."
